Dutch carnival hit is viral for Bavaria
This is a screenshot from a carnival hit conceived by Kumpany for Bavaria. Maybe not many people know this, but carnival is quite big in the Netherlands. That is, if you live ‘below the rivers’ (read: in the south). Every year in January/February some odd carnival hits seep through to the North. This year there was this hit called ‘Zachte G, Harde L’. Translated ‘Soft G’ – referring to the accent in the south – and ‘Hard L’ – referring to the male reproduction organ. The hit already has 1.5 million hits on YouTube, which – for Dutch standards – is quite impressive. What’s more, the song was played intensively on 538. And Jos van Oss, the singer, performed the song throughout the Netherlands in local bars and clubs. Only after the song became a hit, Jos van Oss revealed (on SBS Show News) it was a viral for Bavaria. In the YouTube video Jos only subtly holds a can of Bavaria in his hand. In hindsight it’s clear that the video is advertising for Bavaria – Jos for instance pees against the Heineken brewery. For some it will only generate big question marks, but if you understand Dutch culture, it is a hit – both literally and figuratively.

yes, jos van os was a great hit. but i doubt if anyone will see the link to bavaria. except for the usual suspects like ourselves who are susceptible for this kind of news…
We definitely think this hit has subliminal power. Especially in combination with the new Bavaria design it will certainly generate brand awareness (even among non ad professionals) and – more importantly – unconsciously add likeability and a rough edge to the brand. These effects are subtle, but it will nevertheless have impact. Especially when they will at some point make another – totally different – viral.
Broeha, broeha carnaval is just a couple of days for a small part of The Netherland (not he smartest part anyways) and people who celebrate carnaval do not give 1 fuck if Jos subtly holds a can of Bavaria, Heineken or his own cock.
So what kind of effect will this have on those people?? Absolutely nothing at all. It’s garbage for marketing and advertising blogs like this one, thats it….nothing more nothing less.
Have you heard of product placement? James Bond drinking Heineken, that sort of stuff. We believe this case is a smart form of product placement. But, hey, we don’t have to agree, of course.
I agree that it is clever placement: Bavaria is the beer brand from near den Bosch which is in the south of Holland. That is why he drinks Bavaria even though he now is in Amsterdam he not very adapted to his new environment.
Only problem is that I only now notice when told it is advertising that it was a viral for Bavaria. Bavaria is just beer for the south so that why they use it. You can see it the same as ‘ the new kids on the block’ drinking Aldi beer or is this an even more genius viral then?
