Bofferding says ‘Bravo’ to daily acts of heroism

August 25, 2010, AAB

This commercial was made for the Luxemburg, Belgium and French markets. Since it was created by Amsterdam based Lemon Scented Tea, we wanted to share it anyway. We had never heard of Bofferding. It sounds funny. The commercial is more serious though. It felt to us as a cross-over between Bavaria (that is, the pay-off “Zo, nu eerst een Bavaria”, which basically means ‘Phew, now I deserve a Bavaria’) and Grolsch (more specifically the pay-off from the 80’s: ‘Craftmanship is Mastership’). But that’s not really relevant since the commercial is not made for the Dutchies. Strategically it does make total sense, but there’s something odd about the end, where the hero almost clumsily opens the bottle with his screwdriver, and a bad voice-over somewhat spoils the nice images we saw before. A bit of an anti-climax, really. But, all in all, skillfully made and thus A-brand-worthy. And it did make us a little thirsty, we have to admit.

well.. anti-climax is a bit of an understatement… boring I’d say.

Nice ad, especially like “Bravo Bofferding”..

t filmpje hapert aan t begin. Misschien ff opnieuw uploaden naar Youtube?

“Heroism”? I get that this is a beer commercial and beer commercials try to make small things bigger. But in this case, nothing had anything to do with heroism. Maybe if he saved something inane from falling…but putting a screw in the wall? Disconnect. I did like the tag, though.

I’m pretty sure the ‘heroism’ was meant as tongue and cheek. The guy screwed in a screw, he’s part of a brotherhood of men….like a film trailer, playing up the pun. clever.

  • Wesley says:

Very mediocre. Boring and edgeless. Surprising that low quality gigs like this get covered here. Can anyone pay you for a posting?

  • Peter H says:

    Hm.

  • Tomas says:

A bit like ‘No nuts no glory’ by KesselsKramer (putting the garbage out makes you a hero already). Nicely filmed though.

Sorry, I’ve only now seen this commentary. I think I’d specifically like to speak directly to Amsterdamaged and Wesley. Sorry you guys didn’t like the spot. I am curious about what you say about mediocrity – the spot obviously had something to spark your comments, which only makes me happy. It does go against the idea of mediocrity though: if it was truly mediocre you would’ve just ignored it entirely. What specifically irks you so much about the spot?

Hi John, firstly as we all know a lot of comments on such blogs tend to be a little tongue in cheek so apologies if I was a little frip. Secondly to address your comment I don’t actually dislike the spot. I do however find it a little long winded and pedestrian. I sort of got the idea to far into the spot to be rewarded with the ‘joke’ at the end hence my comment.
Shot very nicely, casting pretty good but a little to ploddy for me personally.

  • JOHN WEICH says:

Okay, that’s fair. I get the tongue and cheek, and appreciate the opinions, even those that don’t sway my way.
