Douwe Egberts (DE) always was Holland’s most famous coffee brand. But ever since Nespresso launched its innovative coffee system and espresso bars have been popping up on every corner of the street, the brand has slowly lost its untouchable status. Time for a radical change they must have thought. By going public and introducing the term ‘Master Blenders’ (“since 1753”) the brand tries to fight back. Not sure if that will work with this commercial, though – created by Only and directed by Jelle Oortman Gerlings. According to the ad DE discovers the world, brings people together in 45 countries, is available at the Dutch chain Coffee Company (?) and finally – like beer brewer Amstel – is happy to be “back home.” If the take-out should be that DE is a master at blending ad propositions, job well done.
