Beacons of colored light streamed out of a row of windows along the Piet Heinkade last Thursday night. A clear indicator, together with a sea of bicycles and the thumping of a determined DJ, of Fitzroy‘s annual New Year’s bash. Who needs Google Maps when the music is so loud? A poster by the door, informing guests of the strict ‘no list, no entrance’-policy, was a bitter-sweet reminder of last year’s success. One that had raised expectations this time around. Would Fitzroy manage to live up to its reputation? Inside, miniature tubs of Ben & Jerry’s, together with Bacardi cocktails and Heinekens, were clear displays of Fitzroy’s top fast-mover clientele. One could enjoy a cocktail and a game of foosball in one room or conduct the necessary networking under the enjoyment of a glass of prosecco in the other. The latter area featured tattoo artist Papanatos, the talent behind the agency’s new wall decorations. He was working his magic by tattooing the iconic Fitzroy lighthouse drawing on, well, pigs legs.
Bites were abundant but we missed any vegetarian options. Lastly, the third and largest area was reserved for the DJ and his un-proportionally loud speaker set. Here guests were allowed to serve themselves straight out of the strategically placed Heineken refrigerators. This is where the dancing went on. And since we enjoy the occasional boogie, we shaked our money makers until sweat was coming out of every pore. Which was after about fifteen minutes, since at one point the heat in the room was more unbearable than the deafening volume of the music. However unpleasant, it was proof that the 600 or so guests were enjoying themselves despite the threat of Friday morning reviews that were approaching uncomfortably fast. Nonetheless it was an eventful night where all ingredients for a good party were in place. And as nasty as an outbreak of scurvy, it was a fact that the next morning, many souls throughout creative Amsterdam, were tormented by a deafening hangover. Thanks Fitzroy. See you next year!
